Kado Yoshioka (1847-1917) was a Japanese-style painter from the Meiji to Taisho periods. He was born in the Nishiki-koji area of present-day Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto. He studied under Kishi Chikudo, a painter who was one of the three great masters of the Kyoto art world during the Meiji period. After Kishi Chikudo’s death. He became a pupil of Takeuchi Seiho, who was said to paint animals down to their smells. He seems to have studied painting under a prominent figure in the Kyoto art world. His son was Kenji Yoshioka, who continued to pursue Japanese-style painting that fused the East and the West.
Ebisu and Daikoku, the top two most popular of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, are depicted in this painting. The artist’s masterful brushwork can be felt in these paintings. It is an auspicious piece to display at New Year’s.
