Introduced here is an inlaid ashtray by Living National Treasure Tatsuzo Shimaoka.
Tatsuzo Shimaoka was born in 1919 in Atago, Minato-ku, Tokyo. His father was a braided cord craftsman.
Later, he encountered the works of Kawai Kanjiro and Hamada Shoji at the Japan Folk Art Museum and aspired to become a folk art ceramicist. He then entered the Ceramics Department of the Tokyo Institute of Technology. The following year, he went to Mashiko to visit Hamada and was allowed to enroll after graduation, but his studies were postponed when the Pacific War broke out and he was sent to Burma. He returned to Mashiko and began studying under Hamada in 1946, which he had longed to do.
Thereafter, he established a residence and kiln in Mashiko, where he established his own techniques and unique style. He had a strong interest in the Jomon period and created the Jomon inlaying technique using Mashiko clay and glaze. His works using this technique, in which braided cords are added after the inlaying process, are also representative of his work and are designated as Important Intangible Cultural Properties.
This ashtray looks more like a vase than an ashtray and can be used as a vase. The light blue inlay gives a very fresh impression and changes with the light.
