Introducing Okugawa Chuemon II, the eldest son of Okugawa Chuemon I, who is regarded as the supreme treasure of Arita white porcelain large rokuro-zukuri and is designated as a national intangible cultural asset.
Born in Arita-cho, Nishimatsuura-gun, Saga Prefecture in 1931, Okugawa began studying pottery under his father, Chuemon I, in 1947.
In 1967, he was selected for the first time for the Prefectural Ceramics Exhibition, and the following year, for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition.
In 1973, he was elected as a regular member of the Japan Crafts Association.
In 1975, upon the death of his father, he assumed the name Okugawa Chuemon II. He is a member of the Japan Traditional Crafts Association.
The tea utensil shown in the photo is made of translucent white porcelain and decorated with a graceful carved floral design.
He said, “As my predecessor’s last will and testament, everything has its own law. Naturally, the world of pottery also has its own laws. Any method that goes against them will eventually be eliminated. I create my own works of art while obeying the law.
I create my own works while obeying the law. While observing the teachings of his predecessors, he adds his own flavor and dares to leave traces of scraping to give the cold impression of white porcelain a touch of warmth.
The tea utensils have a warmth to the cold impression of white porcelain.
